Wo are we and what do we do?

The SSMEIC was founded in Bern on 10 November 1990. It has been a member of the SAGW (Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences) since 1995.

Wo are our members?

As of August 2018 the Society (SSMEIC) has 168 members. They include school and university teachers, researchers, students, publishers and civil servants, staff in international organisations and NGOs as well as those working in museums, publishing and private business. They share an interest in the region of the Middle East and North Africa and in the many and varied manifestations of Islam in different historical, social and political contexts. The Society is particularly concerned to strengthen cooperation between historians, social scientists and language and literature specialists. It moves towards this goal with the SSMEIC Network Platform, which is intended to facilitate meetings between researchers, and with regular events (conferences, lectures, discussions, film projections) organised by the multi-disciplinary executive committee.
