Welcome to Switzerland! The Swiss Society for African Studies is extremely happy to co-organize the 7th European Conference on African Studies (ECAS). We would like to express our deep gratitude to the Centre for African Studies, the main organizer and host of this event. That the most important scientific gathering for scholars of African Studies in Europe was awarded to Basel is a sign of appreciation of the tireless work that has been done in Basel and elsewhere in Switzerland and, of course, a boost of motivation for the future. The number of panels (347) and papers (1 500) proposed for this conference is a testimony to the increasing presence of the African continent in international academia. Twelve years ago, at the first ECAS in London, there were 480 papers presented. The organizer also made a great effort to ensure that as many participants from African institutions as possible could participate.
