Guest lecture and seminar with Ryder Patzuk-Russell (University of Silesia in Katowice)
Freitag, 13. Dezember 2024, 10:15-11:45
Deutsches Seminar (Schönberggasse 9)
SOE-F-11
This seminar will provide an overview of the sources, key figures, and notable events in the history of education in Iceland, from c. 870 to 1550. Students will be introduced to the Sagas of Bishop’s (biskupasögur) and their characterization and idealization of cathedral schools and monastic learning. We will examine the career of the cathedral schoolmaster, itinerant teacher, and reformist bishop Lárentíus Kálfsson, and consider the famous author and poet Snorri Sturluson in light of the long history of speculation about his education at the wealthy farm of Oddi. We will consider the limited and problematic evidence for pre-Christian education. Finally, medieval Iceland produced some highly distinctive textbooks of grammar and poetry that, nonetheless, were related to several medieval discourses.
Dieser Gastvortrag findet im Rahmen des Seminars «Kindheit in den skandinavischen Literaturen» (12:30-14:00) statt.
