Conference: Spanish in Africa past, present and future (28.-29.06.24)

28.06.2024, 09:00 - 29.06.2024, 17:00

The conference “Spanish in Africa past, present and future” will take place from June 28 to 29, 2024 at the Seminar for Ibero-Romance Studies at the University of Basel.

Most Spanish speakers live in the Americas and Europe. However, the Spanish language also plays a role on the African continent that should not be underestimated, especially in the two Spanish exclaves Ceuta and Melilla, Western Sahara, Morocco and Equatorial Guinea.

The aim of this conference is to examine the challenges and opportunities of the Spanish language in Africa in the past, present and future. Individual contributions will examine these various regions of Africa with a clear connection to the Spanish language from a current perspective. The focus will be on sociolinguistic and language policy aspects, but dialectological and linguistic contact phenomena will also be addressed.

The conference will be held as part of the research project “Improving the visibility of Equatorial Guinea as a Spanish-speaking country”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and is co-organized by Sandra Schlumpf-Thurnherr and Sara Carreira.

Date: June 28-29, 2024
