Conference "Reworking the Archives" (12 april -15 april 2023)

The international conference "Reworking the Archives. Hans Himmelheber and African art/ists" is the conclusion of the research project of the same name undertaken jointly by the University of Zurich and the Rietberg Museum.

The international conference, organized in collaboration with the University of zurich and the Rietberg Museum, with funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), will take place from Wednesday 12 April to Saturday 15 April 2023.

The conference will focus on objects, images, and papers from the archive of the art anthropologist Hans Himmelheber. Academics and artists from Europe, Africa and the United States will reflect on current topics ranging from the significance of African art within global history, the restitution of cultural heritage, to the (im)possibility of decolonization.

Among the guest speakers are renowned researchers and professors in the field of Museum Studies and African Studies, such as Ciraj Rassool, Paul Basu, Yacouba Konaté, Zoë Strother, Christopher Steiner and many more.

Seperate registraion is required for each day of the conference.
