The SAA joins the international community in condemning the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine and the violence and suffering this has caused, both within Ukraine and beyond. As a scientific society, it will work to promote informed analysis of this unfolding humanitarian and environmental disaster from the perspectives of our discipline in all its dimensions. In particular, the SAA underscores the tragic inadequacy of ethnic and nationalist rhetorics, so easily and often weaponized to serve the geopolitical and strategic interests of the powerful. Finally, it reaffirms the importance of academic freedom and the critical role of scholarship in creating the conditions for the peaceful resolution of conflict.
